Who we can help
For people recovering from an operation, a broken bone, an illness or a stay in hospital, especially when getting to a clinic would be difficult or tiring. If a stroke or another neurological condition is part of the picture, our neurological physiotherapy page may suit better. If you are not sure, talk to us and we’ll help you decide.
This service often suits people who are:
- Recovering from a hip or knee replacement, or other joint or spinal surgery
- Rehabilitating after a fracture, once cleared to start
- Weaker or less steady after an illness or a stay in hospital
- Relearning the stairs, getting in and out of bed, or walking with an aid
- Finding it hard to travel to a clinic while they recover
What the first visit involves
Rehabilitation at home usually begins like this:
We talk about the operation, injury or hospital stay, and ask to see any guidance from your surgeon or hospital team
We assess strength, movement and walking, and everyday tasks such as getting out of a chair or bed and managing the stairs
We look at the home itself: the stairs, bathroom, bed and chair height, and any walking aids or equipment you have been given
We agree goals that match your guidance and start a first set of exercises, with a clear plan for the days between visits
Planning before discharge
Family members often contact us while someone is still in hospital. Getting in touch before discharge lets us plan the first visit around the discharge information, so it is safe and useful.
How treatment can help
Rehabilitation follows the guidance from your surgeon or hospital team and progresses in small steps: strength, walking, transfers, stairs and the everyday activities you need, from making a drink to getting outside again.
Practising at home means we work on your own stairs, bed and chair rather than recreating them in a clinic. As you progress, we review walking aids and suggest practical changes that may make recovery safer and easier.
We keep in touch with family and with other professionals involved in your recovery, such as GPs, hospital discharge teams, occupational therapists and case managers.

What patients say
Absolute fantastic service from start to finish. We couldn’t have asked for a better physiotherapist to support my mom after her hip replacement. I would highly recommend Max for anyone needing rehab after surgery!
Common questions
Do I need my surgeon’s permission first?
Please share any guidance your surgeon or hospital team has given you and we will follow it. If you are unsure whether you are ready to start, check with them first.
Can a professional refer someone to you?
Yes. We welcome referrals from GPs, hospital discharge teams, occupational therapists, case managers and solicitors, as well as from patients and families, and can keep the referrer updated.
Is this the right service after a stroke?
Our neurological physiotherapy page describes stroke rehabilitation in more detail. If you are not sure which service fits, talk to us and we will help you decide.
Not sure where to start?
Tell us a little about the situation and we’ll help you decide on the next step.
